You can further increase the capacity of your reservoir lake by using explosives to expand that deepest part into a larger area. This increases the depth of the lake another layer placing a dam where the red arrow is, in addition to one at the mouth of the lake, will give you some nice zero-maintenance farmland in that part of the map. This water reservoir will start to dry out in droughts once your population gets bigger though, so this is just a temporary solution.įor the long-term, I usually build a 2-tier dam close to where the river leaves the lake (see image 2 from u/dosedats post). This will give you a starting reserve of water almost right away in the game, and will also keep your farmlands wet during droughts. For this map, I'll usually start by putting a dam right where the river meets the lake.
